Druids outplay Reddish Vulcans
3-1 in classy second-half performance (13 April 2008)Due to the poor
condition of the Chorley Hall Lane pitch, this venue
was switched to the Vulcans ground at the last minute.
With a bare eleven players, Louis Belson made his
debut at right back and without the regular forwards,
Sam Jafarian and Ryan Jones deputised with great grit
upfront. Apart from the first 10 minutes, the Druids
totally dominated this match. They fell behind after
only 3 minutes when a cross from the left fell for one
of the unmarked Vulcans forwards who beat Andrew
Metzelaar from close range. The Druids had a further
let-off when a cross from the right was met with a
header which just went wide. Slowly the Druids
asserted themselves and they created a number of
half-chances which came to nothing. Midway through the
first half, Ryan Jones make some space for himself and
hit the bar. Then a few minutes later Rick Solomons
followed up from a corner and hit the upright. The
Druids had further chances to equalise, but the
Vulcans keeper did well to deny their efforts.
Half-time 1-0 to the Vulcans. After the break, the
Druids kept putting the pressure on the Vulcans and
finally from a corner, Rick Solomons drove in the
deserved equaliser. Another corner a few minutes later
was met by John Armitage head and the ball flew into
the far corner. The Druids now attacked at will and
the score -line should have been more comfortable at
this stage. Chances were spurned by Ryan Jones and Sam
Jafarian, before Ryan Jones scored from a one-to-one
some 10 minutes from time. Ryan Jones had the ball in
the net again a few minutes later, but he was judged
off-site. The defense and midfield were solid in the
second half and allowed the Vulcans no shots on
target. At the final whistle the Druids had run out
deserved winners and a three more points from the
remaining three matches are now required for
promotion.
Man of the Match was
again John Armitage for his never-say-die attitude and
his superb second half goal.
Druids get stuck in Mountfield
mud 3-3 (9 April 2008)This was a very even match where
fortune smiled on the home team on a number of
occasions. The Druids dominated the first half, but
went behind to a looping header after 15 minutes of
play. Chris Imiolek equaliser with a smashing shot a
few minutes later and then a ball destined for the
Mountfield goal dribbled against the post instead of
in the net. The usual forward runs by Oliver Jones
were impeded by the mud and few clear cut chances were
created. After some slack defending on the edge of the
Druids box, a shot destined for goalie Andrew
Metzelaar got a wicked deflection and ended up in the
back of the net. Half-time 2-1 to Mountfield Rovers.
The mud made the ball very hard to move for both teams
and most attacking play died just after the halfway
line. From a good run from Oliver Jones, he finally
managed to squeeze the ball past the Mountfield keeper
for a deserved equaliser. Some 5 minutes later the
same player was upended in the penalty area and the
resulting penalty was expertly despatched by John
Armitage. 3-2 to the Druids and finally ahead. Alas,
the lead did not last long and from some poor
defending from a Mountfield throw-in, one of the
Mountfield forwards drilled the ball past the helpless
Druids keeper. 3-3 and all to play for in the last 15
minutes. Both teams had chances to win the match, but
by this time the players had run out of puff. The
final whistle came and both teams had fought hard in
this entertaining match with a draw a just result.
Man of the Match was given to the
whole team for exceptional effort in the difficult
playing conditions.
Druids waltz past Droylsden
Juniors 9-0 (6 April 2008)This match was marred by a serious
injury to one of the Droylsden players after just 2
minutes of play. This injury caused about 30 minutes
delay while players and managers were waiting for the
ambulance to arrive. Finally the match was underway
and the Druids took the initiative from the start. The
bumpy pitch prevented the Druids from taking an early
lead and a number of chances were put wide of the
Droylsden goal. After 20 minutes Dan Imiolek made a
great run on the right, chipped over the left back and
drilled the ball past the Droylsden keeper. More
pressure followed and John Armitage got on to a great
cross from Oliver Jones to make the score 2-0. Just
before half-time, the Druids were awarded a penalty
when Oliver Jones was upended in the penalty area.
John Armitage coolly converted the spot kick.
Half-time 3-0 to the Druids. Some changes were made at
half-time and soon the Druids had the ball in the net
again after some slick play upfront. Chris Imiolek
just beat the Droylsden centre back to a sublime cross
from Rick Solomons. The opposition crumbled at this
stage and Oliver Jones ran through the middle of the
Droylsden defense to score a well-deserved goal which
was quickly followed by a goal from Dan Imiolek who
fired in a long range shot from the left for his
second. In the last 15 minutes the Druids scored three
more times through first Rick Solomons with a great
left-foot shot, then Andrew Frain got at the end of a
good cross from the left and the total tally of goals
was wrapped up by John Armitage who scored his
hat-trick just before full-time with a superb
left-foot strike in the top corner. Full-time 9-0 to
the Druids.
Man of the Match was John Armitage
for his hat-trick and good attacking play.
Druids canter to 7-2 victory
against Wilmslow Sports (16 March 2008)The Druids started
brightly and opened the score after 10 minutes with a
crisp drive from Alex Jackson from the edge of the
box. With a brisk wind against, the Druids moved the
ball around confidently and Chris Imiolek capitalised
on two good through balls to increase the lead to 3-0.
With the pressure off, the Druids sat back and from a
good shot from just outside the area, Wilmslow Sports
narrowed the margin to 3-1. Immediately the Druids
responded and again Chris Imiolek was at the end of a
good pass from John Armitage to increase the half-time
score to 4-1. With the wind in their backs, the Druids
were supposed to score a hatful of goals in the second
half, but instead it was Wilmslow Sports who scored
through a penalty just 10 minutes into the half. The
Druids were caught offside on a number of occasions
and slack finishing did not bring the expected goal
feast. The Druids kept pressing and Andrew Frain
scored only his second goal for the Druids with the
best goal of the match. Shortly thereafter, Chris
Imiolek beat the offside trap and coolly slotted home.
Just before the final whistle, a melee in the Wilmslow
Sports 6-yard box resulted in the full-back hitting
one of his own players and the ball crept over the
goal-line for an own-goal. Final score 7-2 to the
Druids.
Man of the Match was
Chris Imiolek for his superb goals and good attacking
play.
Druids earn hard-fought draw with New Mills
1-1 (9 March 2008)This
top-of-the-table clash was always going to be a
difficult match for both sides. The Druids were quick
out of the starting blocks and matched the opposition
for commitment and speed. After 5 minutes, Ryan Ford
was brought down in the New Mills half and had to be
substituted. While the substitution took place (Rick
Solomons coming on at left back) Ryan Jones took the
free-kick and hit the bar. From the re-bound John
Armitage headed in the far corner beyond the keepers
reach. 1-0 to the Druids and a fine start it was! The
Druids kept using the wings and Andrew Frain got into
some promising positions. A number of chances were
created, but no further goals were added. New Mills
began to get more of the play in midfield and started
to exert some pressure without carving out any clear
cut chances. Just before half-time an early cross saw
Andrew Metzelaar come off his line, grab the ball, but
he was then unceremoniously bundled over, losing the
ball in the process. A last ditch attempt by Dan
Imiolek to keep the ball out of the goal failed and
the half-time whistle came at 1-1. The Druids made
some changes at half-time, and as a result New Mills
got a tighter grip on the midfield throughout. The
Druids came under sustained pressure but somehow they
kept the ball out of the net. Alex Jackson had a
golden opportunity to nick a Druids win right at the
end, but he miscued his shot from a great cross from
Ryan Jones. After a series of New Mills corners which
came to nothing, the referee signalled full-time and
the Druids had earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
Man of the Match was
John Armitage for his superb goal and his unfamiliar
role as left back.
Druids slip up against Reddish
Vulcans 0-1 (2 March 2008)This was a match played under virtually impossible
wind conditions. The wind blew so strongly that it was
very hard to control the ball or the play and this
affected both team equally. The Druids had the better
of the first half but could not find any kind of
rhythm or accurate passing going. They had about half
a dozen corners which came to nothing and no real
clear-cut chances were created. Half-time 0-0. In the
second half the wind changed from across to against
for the Druids and this gave the opposition the chance
to put on some pressure from long balls. The Druids'
defense coped with relative ease and slowly they
build-up some forward momentum to put pressure on the
Vulcans. Chris Imiolek just chipped over the bar and
he also saw a goal-bound shot drift somehow out of the
goal on a sudden gust of wind. Both sides would have
been happy with a goalless draw at this stage. About 5
minutes from time, a long clearance from the Vulcan's
defense should have been easily cleared by the Druids'
fullbacks, but somehow they got in each others way and
the ball spun in the far corner with the help of the
wind (it looked like going well wide). One goal
was always going to decide this encounter and although
the Druids tried to get back in the game, the
conditions just did not permit any direct attacking
play. The full-time whistle went and the Druids had
lost their first match of the season. Undeserved it
may be, but overall the effort and tenacity of the
Druids were lacking today. This result came as a bit
of a surprise to the players and they can only blame
themselves for this lacklustre display in difficult
circumstances when grit and determination were needed.
Druids stroll past Hyde United
5-1 (24 February 2008)The weather held up this time, but
the pitch was very uneven and this did not make for a
free-flowing match. After an even opening, Andrew
Metzelaar took a massive goal-kick. The ball bounced
near the Hyde penalty area and then bounced and
skidded through the hands of the opponent's goalie. A
goal from a goal-kick, this had not been witnessed
before at the Chorley Hall Lane pitch. 5 minutes later
and another unlikely scorer added his name to the
goal-scorer's list. After a few tackles, Aaron
Jennings found himself on the right of the goal and
unleashed a speculative shot. Again, the keeper made a
hash of it and it ended in the back of the net. 2-0 to
the Druids and this after two gifted goals. Midway
through the first half, with the Druids pressing for
more goals, a mix-up in the Hyde defense gave John
Armitage the chance to squeeze the ball home for 3-0.
Hyde United took advantage of some slack defending in
the Druids penalty area to reduce the arrears to 3-1,
but Oliver Jones scored two great individual goals to
make the half-time score 5-1 to the Druids. At
half-time, the Druids team made a number of changes
for the second half and despite a number of chances
the goals dried up. A poor second half ended in a
stale-mate and at full time the score remained at 5-1
to the Druids.
Man of the Match was Ryan Jones for
his excellent midfield display.
Druids edge out Bramhall North
3-1 (10 February 2008)The Druids made hard work of beating
Bramhall North on a muddy and heavy pitch. This was
never going to be a free-flowing match and this
long-ball match resulted in the Druids pushing home
their advantage when it mattered. From a corner, Sam
Jafarian crossed low and hard across the goal where
Dan Imiolek turned in the ball from 2 yards out. 1-0
to the Druids and this match looked like it was going
to be plain sailing. To their credit, Bramhall dug in
and a very even match developed. Andrew Metzelaar made
a great save to deny an equaliser and half-time came
without much incident at either end. In the second
half, the Druids showed more urgency and a number of
good chances where wasted due to inaccurate shooting
or the heavy pitch. Halfway through the second half,
the Bramhall right-back slipped and Sam Jafarian
slotted the ball home from a tight angle. The Druids
thought they could take it easy now, but some slack
defending saw Bramhall reduce the arrears with a crisp
shot past the Druids keeper. Some more heroics were
needed from Andrew Metzelaar to deny Bramhall an
equaliser and Alex Jackson put the result beyond
Bramhall with a left footed shot in the bottom corner
2 minutes from full-time. This was a hard-fought
victory without too much flair and passing, but the
Druids gained a valuable two points at the end of the
day.
Man of the Match was Andrew
Metzelaar for some outstanding saves.
Druids delight at
4-2 Hazel Grove drubbing (13 January 2008)
This was an important match
for both teams near the top of the table.
Surprisingly, the pitch was in reasonable playing
condition. Both teams were pumped up for this match
and the away team took the early initiative. Against
the run of play, a neat ball over the defense gave
Oliver Jones the chance to hook the ball home. This
lead did not last long when a through-ball caught the
Druids' defense napping and a powerful shot beat
goalie Andrew Metzelaar who got a hand to the ball but
could not prevent it from creeping in at the far
corner. The Druids now pressed forward and from a
well-taken free-kick from Ryan Jones, Dan Imiolek
followed in and squeezed the ball in the corner. A few
minutes later, the Hazel Grove defense lost their
heads, up-ended Oliver Jones in the box and had a
player sent off. The resulting penalty was dispatched
with aplomb by John Armitage. The half-time score
arrived with the score 3-1 to the Druids. The same
pattern emerged in the second half with the Druids
pressing for more goals. With chances galore, Oliver
Jones managed the score from a tight angle. Minutes
later, Oliver Jones was again brought down in the
area, but the penalty was blasted over the bar by Max Petch. Some slack defending then saw the away side
snatch a goal back, but there was no further threat to
the score-line. At full-time, the Druids had run out
deserved 4-2 winners.
Man of the match was
Oliver Jones for his well-taken goals and good running
at the opponent's defense.
Druids outlast
Stockport Junior Blues 6-2 (6 January 2008)The Druids were
definitely rusty after the holidays and a six week
period without a match. Nevertheless, they took the
lead with a spectacular lob from Chris Imiolek and
they thought they had extended their lead when a cross
from John Armitage was converted by Dan Cobb. The ball
had clearly crossed the line, but the referee did not
give the goal. The home side then took the initiative
and equalised midway through the first half. The
Druids had a few let-offs just before half-time and
were happy to close out the half with the score at
1-1. The same pattern emerged after the break with the
home side pushing forward and the Druids defending.
From a corner the ball pin-balled in the Druids 6-yard
box and Sam Jafarian tried to clear, but unfortunately
the ball cannoned off a player into the corner. 2-1
down and not playing well. This did not bode well, but
somehow the Druids got themselves into the match. Ryan
Jones fired a speculative shot which crept under the
keeper into the goal for the equaliser and minutes
later a sweet strike from the same player put the
Druids in front. The home side wilted and the Druids
now pushed forward relentlessly. John Armitage was
tripped in the penalty area and coolly converted the
penalty himself. Jordan Cooke poached a goal from a
miscued shot and in the last minute John Armitage
added his second.
The Druids
had many chances to improve on this score with the
home side running out of puff.
At the final whistle
the Druids had redeemed themselves for a poor first
half and had come away with a fine win on the day.
Final result: 6-2 to the Druids.
Man of the match was
Max Penney for his determined play and good tackling
at right back.
